So, what is Supervision?
Supervision is a confidential working relationship between a supervisor and Therapist, that facilitates the exploration of the Therapist's therapeutic working practice.
In a supportive, safe and totally confidential working environment, the Supervisor can help the Therapist explore client work undertaken, ethical issues, changes in direction, identify further Therapy training requirements, help the Therapist look at the relationship between theory and practice, look at practice management issues, emotional and motivational issues, and any number of other problems and goals that arise in the course of working as a therapist.
Often most Hypnotherapists, Counsellors and Psychotherapist work by themselves. So it is really important to offload, discuss and get talk in order to prevent bad habits / blind spots forming, inappropriate or unethical and the dreaded burnout to occur.
It is a requirement of all professional membership in the first few years of practice and continues to be useful on a voluntary basis. All Therapy Supervision is very supportive and constructive in the early stages of practice, and continues to assist and encourages reflection on client issues and the therapist / client relationship therefore facilitates reflective practice thus encouraging both personal and professional development.
Frequency and duration
Typically, supervision is monthly. Individual face-to-face supervision will normally be one hour in duration but may be contracted for longer if desirable or necessary.
Telephone Supervision is normally for 30 minutes or 45 minutes
in duration, depending on what the Supervisee wants.
In the early days of practice there can be understandable concern about the cost of supervision versus relatively low client numbers. However, it is in these early days of practice that supervision is even more vital as therapists are relatively inexperienced. Even a couple of clients a month can create an ethical dilemma or problem to an inexperienced therapist.
I also offer In-Between sessions email and telephone support.
Contract
A contract will take place between the Supervisor and Therapist, outlining what is to be expected and the Terms & Conditions of the Therapeutic Alliance. This will be discussed at the initial consultation either face-to-face or via the telephone.
